Valentine’s Day is the fifth largest consumer spending event in the United States after the winter holidays and Mother’s Day. According to Statista, Valentine’s Day spending in the US alone reached approximately 24 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. This is an increase of about 2 billion dollars from 2021. When asked whether they were planning to celebrate Valentine’s Day in 2022, just over half of U.S. survey respondents stated they would.

In the United Kingdom, Valentine’s Day spending is predicted to jump to 990 million British pounds in 2022, marking an increase of nearly 15% compared to the previous year. Since 2017, overall expected spending has increased by just over 300 million British pounds.

  • People are estimated to have spent $23.9 billion on Valentine’s Day in 2022 up from $21.8 billion in 2021 and the second-highest year on record.
  • At-home celebrations are no longer in the top five most popular ways of spending for the holiday, as people are eager to spend this holiday eating out in restaurants or being engaged in another leisure activity. A special meal, a trip or participating in a new experience are highly desired by more people than it was only a year ago. No wonder here: pandemic made it so obvious that experiences are more memorable than things, and of course people are hungry for spending time out of home.
